Overview Edit

Created in 1994, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an international consortium that develops interoperable technologies (specifications, guidelines, software and tools) for the Web. W3C also serves as an open forum for discussion about the Web.

W3C primarily pursues its mission through the creation of Web standards and guidelines designed to ensure long-term growth for the Web. However, the W3C is not a regulator and no company (even a member company) has a legal obligation to implement or conform to a standard published by the W3C.

Over 325 organizations are Members of the Consortium. W3C is jointly run by the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (MIT CSAIL) in the United States, the European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM) headquartered in France and Keio University in Japan, and has additional offices worldwide.

W3C developed the PICS (Platform for Internet Content Selection).
