An unmanned system is a system that can operate without human intervention.
Unmanned systems have proven they can enhance situational awareness, reduce human workload, improve mission performance, and minimize overall risk to both civilian and military personnel, and all at a reduce cost.
The capabilities of unmanned systems are not unique over manned systems. Weapon systems produce effects in nearly all domains, independent of being manned or unmanned. . . . [T]here are no requirements for unmanned systems within the Joint force, but some capabilities are better fulfilled by unmanned systems. Unmanned systems provide persistence, versatility, survivability, and reduced risk to human life, and in many cases are the preferred alternatives especially for missions that are characterized as dull, dirty, or dangerous.
