The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) chartered a small UAS Aviation Rulemaking Committee in 2008, which made recommendations for the standards and regulations for the operation of small Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) in the national airspace system.
In 2011 a new UAS Aviation Rulemaking Committee was chartered to provide a mechanism for industry and academic stakeholders as well as other federal, state, and local government entities to provide recommendations and standards to the FAA on issues related to UAS integration.
The FAA has extended the UAS Aviation Rulemaking Committee's charter through June 17, 2016, requesting the Committee continue to provide information, advice, and recommendations to the FAA for UASa integration.
