Telegraph is

[a] system that transmits one-way electronic messages along circuits within a network of central and branch telegraph offices, where the electronic messages are translated by the receiving operator into typed messages that are hand delivered or telephoned to the recipient.[1]

The term "telegraph" is derived from the greek "tele" which means far and "graphein" which means to write.
