A subcontract is

a contract between a contractor and another entity to obtain outside services that the contractor needs to perform the contract requirements. Subcontracts include any agreement, other than an employer-employee relationship, which a contractor enters into for the purpose of fulfilling a contract.
[a] contract or contractual action entered into by a prime contractor or subcontractor for the purpose of obtaining supplies, materials, equipment, or services under a prime contract.[1]
