The Specialized Mobile Radio (SMR) is

a wireless service for public safety and dispatch communications. Newer enhanced SMR systems connect to the public telephone network to compete against cellular and PCS.[1]

The FCC established the Specialized Mobile Radio service in 1974 to provide dispatch service to trucking, taxi and similar industries, government entities, and to individuals on a for-profit basis.
