Definition Edit

A spatial reference system (SRS)

specifies a position on or near the Earth's surface. Within the OpenGIS frame of reference, it can mean either a specification using coordinates or one based on "geographic identifiers (e.g., postal addresses, administrative areas)." When used for coordinate-based representation, the SRS includes a specification of the geodetic datum and the coordinate system employed.[1]
