Definition Edit

The Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is

[a] protocol that provides secure data communication through data encryption. This protocol enables authentication, integrity, and data privacy over networks through a combination of digital certificates, public-key cryptography, and bulk data encryption. This protocol does not provide authorization or nonrepudiation.[1]

Overview Edit

The SSL protocol uses two-layer encryption to ensure security; most often used on websites that handle personal data, such as credit-card or banking information; denoted by the use of "https" in the URL rather than the standard "http".
