Remote access is

[u]se of a modem and communications software to connect to a computer network from a distant location via a telephone line or wireless connection.[1]

[a]ccess to an organizational information system by a user (or an information system acting on behalf of a user) communicating through an external network (e.g., the Internet).[3]
[t]he ability for an organization's users to access its nonpublic computing resources from external locations other than the organization's facilities.[4]
the connection of an information asset from an off-site location to an information asset on state IT infrastructure.[5]
