One becomes a public figure by achieving enough fame or notoriety to be considered well known by the public.

Defamation Edit

In New York Times v. Sullivan,[1] the U.S. Supreme Court held that when suing for defamation, a public figure has the burden of showing by clear and convincing evidence that the defendant acted with actual malice.
