Pseudonymisation is

[t]he process of distinguishing individuals in a dataset by using a unique identifier which does not reveal their "real world" identity.[1]
[d]e-identifying data so that a coded reference or pseudonym is attached to a record to allow the data to be associated with a particular individual without the individual being identified.[2]
