A prototype is a

[s]mall or full-scale, and usually functioning, form of a newly developed product, which is used to evaluate the product design.[1]
[a] preliminary type, form, or instance of a system that serves as a model for later stages or for the final, complete version of the system.[2]

A prototype is "[a]n original or model on which a later system/item is formed or based."[3]
