Private-sector standards are standards adopted voluntarily by the private sector to serve its perceived needs. Two basic categories of private-sector standards are

  1. Industry-standards developed by industry trade associations, and
  2. So-called full consensus standards developed by national standards organizations such as ANSI and ASTM.
