A point of presence (POP) is a specific location within a Local Access Transport Area where a connection to the Internet terminates and/or originates its service.

A point of presence is a physical location that houses servers, routers, ATM switches, and other devices. It is also a physical location where a communications carrier allows other carriers to access its network.
