Ping (an acronym for Packet INternet Groper) is a computer network tool used to test whether a particular host is reachable across an IP network.
Overview[]
It sends a message to another computer, waits for a reply, and displays the time the transmission took. This information can identify what computers are available on the Internet and how long the wait-times are.
It is used primarily to troubleshoot Internet connections. It may also be used to probe network host computers to locate candidate machines for intrusion or attack.
It can also be used to self-test the network interface card of the computer, or as a latency test.
