Definition Edit

The physical layer is the lowest layer in both the OSI and TCP/IP network models. The physical layer is the actual medium used for communications, such as copper wire, optical fiber, or radio waves.

Overview Edit

[T]his layer consists of the physical networking hardware (such as an Ethernet card or Token Ring card) that carries the data packets in a network.[1]

"Examples of this layer include, but are not limited to, Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11), Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), etc."[2]
