Definition[]

A phonic ringtone is a ringtone that consists of a standard MIDI sound file that is either

  • monophonic, where the ringtone is recreated using standard single notes, or
  • polyphonic, where notes can be played simultaneously creating harmony and/or counterpoint.

Typical commercial monophonic and polyphonic ringtones consist of a segment of the musical work representing its “hook,” or most memorable portion of the melody, with little or no revision.
