Partitioning is

the act of logically dividing a media into portions that function as physically separate units."[1]
[m]anaging guest operating system, or virtual machine, access to hardware so that each guest OS can access its own resources but cannot encroach on the other guest operating systems resources or any resources not allocated for virtualization use.[2]
