Out-of-band is

[t]he quantified ability of a system, subsystem, equipment, process, or procedure to provide communications among stakeholders in the event the Public Switched Network (PSN) and/or Internet services became unavailable.[1]
[t]he communication service channel (network connection, email, SMS text, phone call, etc.) used to obtain an authenticator is separate from that used for login.[2]
