Overview[]

The National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute (also called America Makes) was established in August 2012 as a public-private partnership to accelerate the research, development, and demonstration of additive manufacturing technology and to transition it to the U.S. manufacturing sector.

Its federal partners include the Departments of Commerce, Defense, Education, and Energy, NASA, and NSF. America Makes is part of President Obama's broader National Network for Manufacturing Innovation initiative that is designed to stimulate advanced manufacturing technologies and accelerate their commercialization in the United States. America Makes is one of many venues DOD partners with to address additive manufacturing challenges.
