Modeling is the

[c]onstruction of programs used to model the effects of a postulated environment for investigating the dimensions of a problem for the effects of algorithmic processes on responsive targets.[1]
[t]he process of abstracting information from tangible processes, systems and/or components to create a paper or computer-based representation of an enterprise-wide or business line activity.[2]
[a] mathematical representation of a process, system, or object developed to understand its behavior or to make predictions. The representation always involves certain simplifications and assumptions.[3]
