Mean time between failures (MTBF) is

an indicator of expected system reliability calculated on a statistical basis from the known failure rates of various components of the system. MTBF is usually expressed in hours.[1]
[f]or a particular interval, the total functional life of a population of an item divided by the total number of failures (requiring corrective maintenance actions) within the population.[2]
