Definition Edit

A LATA (an acronym for Local Access Transport Area) is a contiguous geographical area by which telephone service is organized.

Overview Edit

Most states have more than one LATA and some LATAs cover parts of more than one state. There were 196 local geographical areas in the U.S. created by the Modified Final Judgment in which a divested Regional Bell Operating Company (RBOC) was permitted to offer exchange telecommunications and exchange access services.
