Overview Edit

Originating as a pilot project by the Department of Defense (DOD)'s Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) aimed at improving the exchange of counterterrorism information between local and state law enforcement and components of DOD and DIA, the Joint Regional Information Exchange System (JRIES) is an Internet-based counterterrorism communications initiative.

Now managed as an application on the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Homeland Security Information Network (HSIN), the JRIES target audience includes state and local governments, counterterrorism and intelligence agencies, and law enforcement agencies. Operating at the sensitive but unclassified (SBU) level, JRIES facilitates collaboration among its members by providing a secure environment for exchanging emails and peer-to-peer collaboration allowing real-time dialogue, and also provides access to data visualization software and analysis tools. It has also provided real-time links between the Homeland Security Operations Center and counterterrorism teams at high-profile events.
