An intranet is a

private network that uses the infrastructure and standards of the Internet and World Wide Web, but is cordoned off from the public Internet through firewall barriers.[1]

Overview Edit

An intranet may be a stand-alone network, operating on a computer server that is part of company’s private local area network for access only by persons who have access to that network. Intranets can also be connect to the Internet using a firewall that allows corporate users to access the Internet but limits the ability of outside users to access data on the corporate intranet.

An intranet will frequently include features common to the Internet such as e-mail, websites and FTP file transfers.
