Interoperability standards (also referred to as interoperability protocols) are

[c]ommonly agreed on standards that enable different computers or programs to share information. Example: HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) is a standard method of publishing information as hypertext in HTML format on the Internet.[1]
