The Interface Message Processor (IMP) was the name given to the initial nodes connected together to create the initial ARPANET (which later bacame the Internet). Built by Bolt Beranek and Newman (BBN). Each IMP performed the store-and-forward packet-switching functions that allowed the IMPs to communicate with each other.
