An intelligent modem is

a type of modem that possesses added or enhanced features as compared to a standard modem. The term 'intelligent' is commonly used in the data processing and data communications field in an adjectival sense to describe an advanced-type modem having sophisticated features and to distinguish said products from standard 'dumb' modems with the advanced features.[1]
