Imaging is

the representation or reproduction of an object's outward form; especially a visual representation (i.e., the formation of an image).
the process used to obtain all of the data present on a storage media (e.g., hard disk), whether it is active data or data in free space, in such a way as to allow it to be examined as if it were the original data.[1]
[a] process that allows one to obtain a bit-for-bit copy of data to avoid damage of original data or information when multiple analyses may be performed.[2]
