Overview[]

United Kingdom[]

"Identity card schemes were introduced in the UK for the rst time in 1916. However, it was after their use in World War 1 that they became particularly controversial, and reached peak controversy in the 1950s. Identity cards were introduced during World War 1 as a way of increasing domestic security, but were generally regarded as a threat to civil liberties, and were discontinued at the end of the war. For similar reasons, they were re-introduced in 1939 and met with an equally unenthusiastic public response. Despite the objections, the government decided to continue the scheme in the face of the cold war and it was not until 1952 and that identity cards were abolished a second time."[1]
