Hi5 is described as "an online place to meet friends." It was founded in 2003 by Ramu Yalamanchi, an Indian-American entrepreneur and current CEO. It began as "Sona," a match-making site patterned after "match.com" to serve the South Asian market. In December 2003, the site was re-launched as Hi5, an international social networking site.
The site began to target Spanish-speaking markets when it noticed its popularity in those areas. Worldwide more than 80 million people have registered accounts with Hi5, and the site draws nearly 46 million unique users per month (as of April 2008). Hi5 is currently the top social networking service for the Spanish-speaking market.
