A hardware token is

[a] physical object that is used to provide strong authentication of the holder's identity. A common hardware token is a smart card that is swiped or scanned. Other types include small devices with digital displays of constantly shifting login information or USB keys that must be plugged into devices' ports before they can be used to prove one entity's identification.[1]
