A handshaking procedure is

[a] dialogue between a user and a computer, two computers, or two programs to identify a user and authenticate his or her identity. This is done through a sequence of questions and answers that are based on information either previously stored in the computer or supplied to the computer by the initiator of the dialogue.[1]
