The Australian Government Computer Emergency Response Team (GovCERT.au) (CERT Australia) was established in 2005 to help formulate cybersecurity policy and to liaise with foreign government computer emergency response teams (CERTs).
GovCERT.au assists in coordinating Australian Government policy for computer emergency preparedness, response, readiness and recovery in relation to Australia's critical infrastructure and key business. GovCERT.au is responsible for providing advice and information to help owners and operators of critical infrastructure and key business secure their networks and systems.
GovCERT.au is the point of contact within the Australian Government for foreign governments on CERT issues impacting on Australia's critical infrastructure and key business, and coordinates any related requests.
GovCERT.au is the Australian Government lead on issues related to supervisory control and data acquisition system (SCADA) and control systems security. GovCERT.au receives cybersecurity information for distribution to Australian businesses, including critical infrastructure owners and operators.
On November 23, 2009, the Attorney-General announced the name of the new national CERT: CERT Australia.
CERT Australia will be a source of cybersecurity information for the Australian community and a point of contact for Australia’s international cybersecurity counterparts. It will have a coordination role and incident handling capability in the event of a serious cyber event.
The current functions and services of GovCERT.au will continue as part of CERT Australia.
