A geomagnetic disturbance

occur[s] when the sun ejects charged particles that interact with and cause changes in the earth's magnetic fields. These charged particles can cause currents to enter the electricity grid through long conductors, such as transmission lines. These currents can disrupt the normal operation of the grid and, in some cases, damage equipment such as transformers.[1]
