A general support system (GSS) is

[a]n interconnected set of information resources under the same direct management control that shares common functionality. It normally includes hardware, software, information, data, applications, communications, and people. Examples of a GSS include a local area network (LAN), an agencywide backbone, a communications network, a data processing center, a tactical radio network, or a shared information processing service organization.[1]
