A functional specification (also functional spec, specs, functional specifications document (FSD), or program specification) is

[t]he main product of systems analysis, which presents a detailed logical description of the new system. It contains sets of input, processing, storage, and output requirements specifying what the new system can do.[1]
[i]n electronic records, a detailed description of the hardware, software, communications, and human resources needed for an information system to be built, installed, tested, operated, and maintained.[2]
