Federation is "the act of combining data or identities across multiple systems."

Federation is

[a]n act of establishing a relationship between two or more entities or an association compromising any number of service providers and identity providers.[1]
a trust relationship between discrete digital identity providers (IdPs) that enables a relying party to accept credentials from an external identity provider in order to make access control decisions; provides path discovery and secure access to the credentials needed for authentication. . . .[2]
[a]n association of enterprises that come together to exchange information about their users and resources in order to enable secure electronic transactions and collaborations. Implementing federations is a significant technical challenge.[3]
