Federation is "the act of combining data or identities across multiple systems."

Federation is

[a]n act of establishing a relationship between two or more entities or an association compromising any number of service providers and identity providers.[1]
an organization composed of institutions which agree on a common set of principles in order to share information.
[a]n association of enterprises that come together to exchange information about their users and resources in order to enable secure electronic transactions and collaborations. Implementing federations is a significant technical challenge.[2]
