National Bureau of Standards, Computer Security Guidelines for Implementing the Privacy Act of 1974 (FIPS 41) (May 30, 1975) (full-text).

Overview Edit

The selective application of technological and related procedural safeguards is an important component of the Federal Government's efforts to protect the privacy of individuals, as required by the Privacy Act of 1974. These guidelines establish the groundwork for assessing the risks of unauthorized disclosures of personal data in current automated systems and developing a set of safeguards to minimize those risks. The are made available for use by Federal agencies within the context of the Office of Management and Budget's total program for implementing the Privacy Act.
