An Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) is

[a] type of EFT system involving the transfer of public entitlement payments, such as welfare or food stamps, through direct deposit or point-of-sale technology. . . . The recipient can be given an identification card, similar to a benefit card, and a PIN allowing access to the benefits through an electronic network.[1]
