Definition

An e-commerce site (or electronic commerce site) is a website offering products or services for sale. It covers a range of different types of businesses, from consumer-based retail sites, through auction or music sites, to business exchanges trading goods and services between corporations. It is currently one of the most important aspects of the Internet.

The majority of e-commerce sites are retail stores selling products directly to the public. However there are also numerous online stores dedicated to business-to-business (B2B) sales and wholesale activities. E-commerce is not limited to the selling of physical products, but also refers to the selling of services where payments for those services are made online.
