Document exploitation (DOCEX) is

[t]he systematic extraction of information from documents either produced by the threat, having been in the possession of the threat, or that are directly related to the current or future threat situation for the purpose of producing intelligence or answering information requirements. This may be conducted in conjunction with human intelligence (HUMINT) collection activities or may be conducted as a separate activity.[1]
