A digital entity is

[a]n entity represented as, or converted to, a machine-independent data structure consisting of one or more elements in digital form that can be parsed by different information systems; and the essential fixed attribute of a digital entity is its associated unique persistent identifier, which can be resolved to current state information about the digital entity, including its location(s), access controls, and validation, by submitting a resolution request to the resolution system.[1]
