Overview[]
On January 19, 2011, the Government of the Czech Republic approved the state policy in electronic communications — called the "Digital Czech Republic" — by Resolution No. 50. A priority of this policy is to support access of the citizens of the Czech Republic to the high-speed Internet with the primary goal of decreasing the so-called "digital divide" between rural and urban areas. The document evaluates the current state of access and the development of electronic communications in the Czech Republic with the biggest potential of growth and suggests the tools necessary to fulfill the goals that are feasible and that would ensure adequate support of the economic and social development of Czech society in the advancing trends of globalization.
This document was prepared by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and is based on theses and subsequent comments from both the private and public sectors. Digital Czech Republic represents a framework document, in which, in cooperation with other involved central state administration, other practical steps to reach the goals will follow.
Objectives of the strategy:
- 1. Ensure by 2013 high-speed Internet access in all populated localities of the Czech Republic with a minimum transmission speed of at least 2 Mbit/s (download) and in cities at least 10 Mbit/s.
- 2. Ensure by 2015 high-speed Internet access in rural communities with a transmission speed of at least 50% of the average transmission speed achieved in cities. At the same time, 30% of households and businesses in cities should have access to connections with transmission speeds of at least 30 Mbit/s.
