Definition[]

A declaratory judgment is one which declares the rights of the parties or expresses the opinion of the court on a question of law, without ordering anything to be done.

"For example, a party who wishes to use a product or process patented by another can ask a federal court for a declaratory judgment that the patent is invalid."[1]
