A database administrator is

the person responsible for the architecture, configuration, operation, security, maintenance, performance, and/or backup/recovery of a database.[1]
[a]n individual with an overview of one or more data bases who controls their design and use. Responsibilities are the addition, modification, and deletion of records and frequently the security of the data base.[2]
