A data type

[i]dentifies the kind of information that a column in a database table represents. The data types (e.g. string, integer, and date) are physical representations and are dependent on the actual DBMS.[1]
[is t]he attribute of a variable, field, or column in a table that determines the kind of data it can store. Common data types include character, integer, decimal, single, double, and string.[2]
refers to the data-encoding rules describing how various kinds of recordsword-processing documents, e-mail messages, images — are expressed as a collection of bits.[3]
