Government Accountability Office, DHS Privacy Office: Progress Made but Challenges Remain in Notifying and Reporting to the Public (GAO-07-522) (Apr. 27, 2007) (full-text).
Overview[]
The GAO reported that the DHS Privacy Office had addressed its mandate to ensure that technologies sustain, and do not erode, privacy protections through a variety of actions, including implementing its PIA compliance framework and raising awareness of privacy issues through a series of public workshops. However, GAO noted that the office had made little progress in updating notices for legacy systems of records — older systems of records that were originally developed by other agencies prior to the creation of DHS.
The GAO recommended that DHS designate full-time privacy officers at key DHS components and establish a schedule for the timely issuance of Privacy Office reports, among other things.
