A covert channel (also called a confinement channel) is an

[u]nintended and/or unauthorized communications path that can be used to transfer information in a manner that violates an IS security policy.[1]
[a] communications channel that allows two cooperating processes to transfer information in a manner that violates the system's security policy.[2]
