Consolidation is

a means of combining workload onto fewer computers or concentrating data processing into fewer physical facilities. Physically moving data processing equipment from multiple locations to a lesser number of locations can assist agencies in reaching consolidation goals, such as reducing the cost of data center hardware, software, and operations, in addition to real estate and energy costs.[1]
